Review : Smith's on Bayswater - Butcher & Wine Merchant - CLOSED

32 Bayswater Road
Kings Cross

Brunch 11am Sunday
Lunch 12pm Fridays
Dinner 5pm - Late 7 days

Brunch has always held a certain appeal for us, we love the melding of breakfast & lunch dishes on a menu and the ability to move between the two.

Smith's resides within the former home of Bayswater Brasserie (an old fave of ours) & we are keen to see if Smith's is a worthy replacement.

So this rainy Sunday morning we head to Smith's for a spot of leisurely brunching....

A night out with Heston Blumenthal...

State Theatre
Market St
Sydney

March 15  2011
8pm

What better way to spend a Tuesday night than catching up with our old pal Heston Blumenthal? To hear all about his past, present and exciting future. As we sat there merely metres away from the food genius himself we were almost able to forget that he was not only our 'pal' for the night, but that we were sharing him with 2000 others at the magnificent State Theatre in Sydney.  Oh well... at least we were in the front row!!!!
Feeling very much the VIP's we were able to sweep imperiously past all of those poor people in the nosebleeders with our signed copy of the latest book to settle into our front row seats - ready to be inspired.

Review: The Bite Parramatta (then Chocolateria San Churro!)

308 Church St
Parramatta

Sun-Thurs:
12pm - 10pm
Fri-Sat:
12pm - 11pm

We needed to have a catch up with Cooty (aka Squeak's mum) and as observant readers of Buggles & Squeak will know... the choice of lunch venue is a minefield that needs to be navigated with care. Seafood and Italian are usually the best options, but of late seafood seems to have ignited a few unexpected landmines so Italian seems our best option. The Western Suburbs are our destination so we check out what Parramatta has to offer and fall upon a place called 'The Bite'. The menu looks extensive which, while isn't necessarily a good thing in normal circumstances, seems to be what we need. There are loads of pasta and pizza options with a bit of seafood for good measure... so we are proud of seemingly negotiating our way across the minefield successfully!

Review : Gelbison at Leichhardt - Now CASA MESSINA

116 Marion Street
Leichhardt

Open 7 nights
5pm-11pm

While we could
happily eat in 'fine diners' on a regular basis (money permitting), we sometimes get a hankering for a spot of 'cheap & cheerful'. This might be Indian, Chinese or as it happens tonight....Italian.

With that in mind we take ourselves off to Leichhardt to see if Gelbison is cheap & cheerful enough to satisfy our craving.

Review: Avido......followed by The Bentley Restaurant and Bar

438 Oxford Street
Paddington

5pm til late Mon - Tues
Midday til late Wed - Sun

Don't you love it when you have one of those lazy midweek escapes from the drudgery of work?
After an exciting evening with Heston, we decided we needed a sleep in & a day of leisurely lunching.

We decided to kick things off at Avido, somewhere we have been meaning to try for a while now.

Review : Envy Cafe and Gallery

109 Smith St
Summer Hill

Weekdays
6.30am - 6.00pm

Saturday
6.30am - 5.00pm

Sunday
7.00am - 4.00pm

Summer Hill....even though relatively close to where we live, is not a suburb often frequented by Buggles & Squeak . For starters there isn't a whole lot going on cafe/restaurant wise...in fact the suburb is sadly lacking in this area.

This fine Saturday morning however, does indeed find us in Summer Hill.... just as the tummy rumbles begin to hit!

We had visited Envy years ago and we weren't that impressed back then. However, the previous owners have long moved on & we are keen to see if things have improved.

Review : The Moose Newtown

530 King Street
Newtown

Tue to Fri 5pm - 11pm
Sat 3pm - 11pm

Sun 3pm - 10pm

The Moose sits on our favourite end of King Street, the St Peters end, just near Alice Street.

Let’s start by saying that ‘The Moose’ is very small, more calf than moose really.
There are but a few tables strewn around the substantial bar.
But what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for with the well thought out wine, cocktail & beer list and the really tasty grazing plates.

It is early Tuesday evening, so we have no problem securing a comfy table out front overlooking King Street.

Review: The Woods Cafe & Deli

160 William St
Earlwood

Mon-Fri: 7am - 6pm
Sat-Sun: 8am - 4pm

How exciting!! A new cafe opening up in Earlwood owned and run by Emma Woods, a former Rockpool Chef and recipient of the Josephine Pignolet Best Young Chef Award. From our experience of cafes opened up by accomplished chefs (eg. Sebastian Tyson of Bar Mattino) you can be pretty sure you will receive simpler food, but done really well. It is with this is mind that we organise a spot of Sunday brekki with C1 & C2 following an eventful week.
