Harry's Cafe de Wheels opened about a week ago on the old 'Deno's Diner' site.

My last experience of a Harry's pie was back in the late 80's, when staggering home to Potts Point (after perhaps too many drinks), I stopped by the original van at Woolloomooloo.
The pie I ordered that night was full of gristle & even in my somewhat inebriated state I had to throw it away. If there is one thing I cannot abide it is pie gristle.

So for the last 20 odd years I have stayed away from the Harry's van.

McKay & Boys supplied the gristle pie of the 80's....these days they are supplied by Hannah's pies of Ultimo...so on this lazy Sunday evening Buggles & Squeak decided to give Harry's Cafe de Wheels at Tempe a go.

When we arrive we are suprised to see a huge queue of people waiting to order.

We check the menu & Buggles decides to order the signature pie 'The Tiger'...a chunky lean beef pie served with mashie peas, mash & gravy...Buggles decided to substitute the regular beef pie with a 'curry' one.

I am still apprehensive...I'm not sure that I can order a pie yet, I need Buggles to test the waters, so I ordered a hot dog instead.

Buggles assured me that the pie passed the all important no gristle test, the beef was chunky & tender with a nice curry hit. Buggles thought the pie base could have been crisper, but on the whole the combination of pie, mash, peas & gravy was a winner for her.

I ordered a Hot Dog with garlic onions and cheese & tomato sauces, to accompany this I ordered mash, peas & gravy on the side. The hot dog was good, the frankfurt smoky, the bun soft, the mash, peas & gravy...delicious.

We were quite excited about ordering an 'old school' custard tart...alas none were available.

All in all the Harry's experience was pretty good and we will return.
Perhaps next time I will order a pie!

glad to hear it's a lot better than your previous experience. haven't been for ages but it's a good old favourite for many. i should check it out for a lunch spot next time i'm in the Woolie area :-)

It might be better than 20 years ago, but it's still gross!
Sure, there was no gristle, but there wasn't any flavour either.
