Tonight we are embarking on a 5 course tasting menu and are looking forward to the Japanese/French fusion.

Review: Baroque

88 George Street (cnr Hickson Rd)
The Rocks, Sydney

Mon-Sat: Midday - late
Sun: Midday - 4:30pm

I love a macaron. Who doesn't? Squeak loves French fare. Who doesn't? It seems only natural that we should find oursleves lunching at Baroque Bistro one fair Saturday. We have been desirous of dining here for some time, but just hadn't quite got around to it, but finally we bit the bullet, and before we know it are seated in the open, busy and industrial inspired space that is Baroque with glasses of Prosecco in hand.

Review : Embrasse (A Spontaneous Return Visit) - CLOSED

312 Drummond Street
Carlton, Melbourne

03 9347 3312
info@embrasserestaurant.com.au

Wed-Sun Dinner from 6.30pm
Fri-Sun Lunch from Noon
Mon/Tues Closed

Cooty loves Italian food. Old school Italian, that is.

So the plan for this evening is to head to Lygon Street to see if we can find somewhere ‘old school’ enough.

However, after a very long day traipsing around the city and a matinee performance of ‘Love Never Dies’, Cooty decides that she would rather stay in with a pizza and a crossword.

So what are Buggles and Squeak to do? We want to go out to dinner, but we haven’t booked anywhere!!!

As we are staying in Carlton, we realise we are not too far away from Embrasse. So, pizza delivered we hit the road & make our way to Drummond Street.

Review : Ad Lib Bistro (Double Bay) - CLOSED

21 Bay Street
Double Bay

9988 0120
doublebay@adlibbistro.com

Tuesday-Sunday:
Lunch (from Midday) and Dinner (from 5pm)
Saturday/Sunday:
Breakfast from 9am

It is yet another cold, wet & windy Sydney day. We need comfort food, something warming to the body & soul. We have long wanted to dine at Dietmar Sawyere's Ad Lib Bistro and today seemed a better day than most to sample his take on bistro fare.

Ad Lib Double Bay is quite a large space with a classic 'bistro' fitout (think dark, warm woods & classic white tablecloths).

The menu is also classic bistro with entrees that include: Duck Liver parfait, Onion marmalade; Onion Soup Gratinee; Roast Portobello mushrooms, snails & parsley crumbs....all very appealing.

Review : Bistro Ortolan - CLOSED

134 Marion Street
Leichhardt

Dinner
Tuesday-Saturday
6pm to 10pm

The Ortolan is a European songbird considered a delicacy in France.
The birds, once caught (using nets), are kept in black boxes (to simulate night) for a few weeks and fed oats & millet to fatten them up. Following this, the bird is killed by being drowned in armagnac. The head is removed, it is plucked and then roasted (for 8 minutes) with its internal organs and skeleton intact.
To eat, drape your head with a linen napkin (to capture the precious aromas), take the entire bird in your mouth & chomp down. The flavour is said to be gamey with foie gras overtones.
The bird is considered endangered in France, so it is now illegal to sell Ortolan.... unfortunately though, it is not illegal to eat them.

Bistro Ortolan is not dissimilar to the bird from which it takes its name, it is indeed a rare (though not so endangered) species in the suburb of Leichhardt.

Review : Bistro Moncur

The Woollahra Hotel

116 Queen Street
Woollahra

Lunch

Tue to Sun Noon - 3pm

Dinner
Mon to Sun 6pm - 10:30pm

Buggles and Squeak have loved Bistro Moncur for years now. We have visited often & have never once been disappointed in a meal there.

The clientele is very 'old school' Woollahra, however Buggles and Squeak don't mind this, we have always considered ourselves Eastern Suburbs 'ladies' trapped in Inner West bodies!

It had been a while since our last lunch, so we were very much looking forward to it.

Review: Embrasse Restaurant - CLOSED

312 Drummond Street
Carlton
Melbourne

Dinner: Wed - Sun from 6:30pm
Lunch: Thurs - Sun from noon

Our recent jaunt to Melbourne led us down a few food paths, and on our last evening we decided that this path would lead to Embrasse Restaurant in Carlton.  This restaurant has been receiving a lot of accolades recently with the chef, Nicholas Poelaert, named Young Chef of the Year in  The Age Good Food Guide. On entering, the dining space is intimate, simple and elegant and is suggestive of a French bistro. As has become our habit, we decided to start the meal off with a glass of Sparkling wine. In this case, I had a Stonier 2007 while Squeak opted for a Kir Royale.
